Self Driving Forklifts - a game changer

Phantom Auto has created software that enables forklifts to be operated remotely from thousands of miles away.

Bloomberg reports that they have done a deal with Mitsubishi Logisnext Co (the third-biggest company in the $45 billion-plus global market for forklifts. )

This will enable Kyoto-based Mitsubishi Logisnext to offer forklifts that can rove around a warehouse in California, controlled by workers sitting at a desk a continent away.

“We’re moving warehouse workers into office jobs,” says Elliot Katz, Phantom Auto co-founder and chief business officer.

Because it removes geographic labor restrictions and improves efficiency as drivers can be “teleported” into factories experiencing surges, the software offers the potential to knock 30% or more off forklift operation costs, Katz say

Phantom Auto is an OurCrowd portfolio company - who in April 2019 raised $13.5 million of financing in a Series A round led by Bessemer Venture Partners

Safety Culture becomes a Unicorn

Luke Anear, Founder and CEO of  SafetyCulture, a Sydney-based global operations platform which empowers working teams to drive improvements in the workplace, raised $73m at a $1.6 billion valuation.

The round was led by Insight Partners, with participation from existing investors Tiger Global, Index Ventures and Blackbird.

The funds will b use to expand the business as it continues to evolve from a checklist app into an operations platform for working teams.

What it does

Safety Culture provides a mobile operations platform that leverages the power of human observation to identify issues and opportunities for businesses to improve everyday life.

The Story

While working in a workers comp business - Luke wondered, why are all these people getting injured at work in the first place? Surely, there should be a way to make workplaces safer?

For the first 9 years, the business grew slowly to around $300K revenue a year as, as Luke freely admits, “no one really used our products, which was a safety training platform and then some document management systems.”

In 2019 the business turn over was more than $100M with 300 staff in 5 offices (including one each in Kansas, Manchester and Manila).

Today, More than 28,000 organisations use its flagship products, iAuditor and EdApp, to perform checks, train staff, report issues, automate tasks and communicate fluidly.

The platform has over 1.5M users in more than 85 countries.

So what does a unicorn founder looking like?

Oversupply of Money are making valuations soar and unicorns Breed!

In the past week alone, investors valued five more startups at $1 billion or more, bringing the total this month to 26, PitchBook data shows. What was once a remarkable milestone worthy of special mention has become ever more common.

VCs are investing in clusters - with well funded Startups having warchests to make strategic acquisitions

Cyber Security - Signifyd $1.34b

Remote hiring platforms - Deel $1.24b

A $ Billion Dollar fund needs $5b to move the needle

How does a fund find a Unicorn Founder?

Ali Tamaseb (pictured), a venture capitalist with the Silicon Valley deep-tech firm DCVC. Explores what a unicorn founder looks like - in his book “super founders” coming out in May

Is it

  • A Stanford graduate
  • An ex employee of Google , Amazon or Facebook?
  • Does Age, education, Ivy League matter

“What matters is having a history of having generated value, even if that value was small." Says Tamaseb

Case study

The founders of Honey, a scrappy fintech company based in Los Angeles, turned out to be antiheroes with a great shot at unicorn stardom despite their seeming lack of a dream pedigree. George Ruan and Ryan Hudson bootstrapped Honey, a provider of coupon codes for online shoppers, because they couldn't get VC funding for the first couple years. After eventually getting backers from outside Silicon Valley's venture establishment, Honey took off and in late 2019 it was acquired by PayPal for $4 billion. Ruan and Hudson didn't have great connections or big names on their resumes, but they had produced a few small ventures along with their failures.

"These people are more likely to found billion-dollar companies compared with people who have the perfect pedigrees," Tamaseb said.

Is Australia on the Cusp of a Silicon Valley type tech boom?

Tech editor for the AFR , Paul Smith’s takeout from the AFR summit is  that Australia can become the new tech hub.

Anthony Eisen of  Afterpay and Steve Vamos of  Xero - agree that Australia is on the cusp of a tremendous post-pandemic growth opportunity through the creation of a Silicon Valley-style global technology centre and widespread digitisation in small businesses.

Anthony  Eisen suggested that  Australia could use its COVID-19 success story,  outstanding educational system,  infrastructure  and lifestyle to attract significant investment from global tech giants and emerging start-ups - being a tech hub exceeding competing head to head with Silicon Valley and Tel Aviv .

The recipe of a Global Tech Hub

Australia has the recipe of being  a global leader in tech and has  the key ingredients  - it now needs the magic formula - to mix and bake these awesome ingredients!

Talent, experience, mindset and the desire to collaborate and connect entrepreneurs , government, universities, corporates, and money - and we’re cooking - says Ivan Kaye - founder of BSI

Afterpay, Atlassian, Redbubble, Canva, Zip,
NextTech, Referron and myreruitmentplus   (and who knows - even Bitcoin?) have shown that we can build global technology platforms.

The Power of the SME

Steve Vamos said that Xero’s extraordinary growth was a result of the willingness of Australians to be early adopters of  tech and cloud-based software, with 50 per cent of small businesses in Australia now having some connection to a cloud-based accounting platform.

Small business represents over 90pc of the workforce - and is a significant factor in the success of technologies.

“Small business owners are very busy and they aren’t excited by a new change. Like when we see new iPhone software, they don’t think, ‘What can this do for me?’ They think. ‘Oh God, what is this going to do to me.’ ”
That’s the challenge!

What was the tipping point to make small business in Australia make the change to Xero? Or adopt the iPhone? Or use Microsoft, LinkedIn, Google, Insta, Amazon or Facebook?

Fintech Athena disrupting the Legacy Banks core business - home loans!

Gotta luv the combination of how ex NAB execs, Nathan Walsh and Michael Starkey of Home Loan provider, Athena,  have used the powerful combination of outstanding customer service + a smart domain knowledge + strong tech driven operational excellence, to disrupt the banking industry !

“The big legacy banks have been broken by their complexity. It’s not new news, the community has been getting a raw deal for quite some time, [but] the time couldn’t be riper to put a genuine alternative out there.” Says Walsh

It has settled over $2billion of home loans since it started two years ago - automatically giving existing customers the same low rates as new customers.

Here is the knockout blow ....

“Our mission is to acquire new customers and retain existing customers by delivering an exceptional customer experience. We have passed through RBA rate cuts in full to all our customers. using the right technology allowing us to listen, learn and innovate for customers and develop great products.”  Walsh shares with the AFR.

Claire Gillies of Deloitte helped implement the tech around Salesforce by including a blend of interviews, interactive workshops and observing how the technology is used to drive improved insights to build an amazing business  with CX in front and centre of everything it does!

So, where does Athena get its money from?

"There’s $2.7 trillion in super which is going to increase to $5 trillion and then $10 trillion, or the $17 trillion in bonds at negative interest rates in which high quality mortgages are an attractive asset class.”

The customer pitch

“Refinance With Athena and Enjoy Zero Fees So You Can Pay Off Your Home Loan Faster. Learn How Athena Can Accelerate paying off your Home loan! P&I, OO, 60% LVR. Cr Warning. Fee Free Extra Repayments. Equity Release. Direct Debit Repayments. Choose Your Loan Terms.

Apply now. 5 minute application. 100% Online. Award winning. Fast outcomes. 100% Online Application. No Early Repayment Fees. Low Fees, Great Rates. 6 months to 5 years. Borrow from 2k to 30k. Types: Personal Loans, Loan Calculator, Savings Accounts.”

Athena’s People and Investors

It’s all about the people says Walsh

“The beautiful thing about great talent is it attracts other great talent,”

Part of the magic formula  was to source the  skills and experience to help the startup through the growth phase.

“A big part of the journey is around the investors and the team we attract to the business,”

The value of relationships with people who have an understanding of the startup journey, who are able to introduce the founders to other connections, who are thought leaders in their fields, and who share the startup’s values is “broader than funding”, Walsh says.

“You are the company you keep.”

The Capital Raising  Journey

Athena initially raised a Seed round of $3m  in June 2018, followed by a Series A round of $15m from  Macquarie Capital and Square Peg and B funding of $25m  before it launched in February 2019, receiving $250 million in applicationswithin the first three days.

8 months later, Athena raised a series C $70m round in Oct 19 supported by Square Peg Capital, AirTree Ventures,  Hostplus,  AustralianSuper, Salesforce Ventures and NAB Ventures at a valuation  of $230m, after  it had originated $500m of loans. (They delivered on their promise - their investors trusted Asad supported  them!)

Today it has written  over $2b of loans - could it now be a unicorn?

Where to from here?

Elivio exits to Dixa for $US15m with a $3m ARR

Elevio (whose ARR is circa $3m) has exited to Dixa in a cash and share deal worth circa US$15m, providing a significant exit for its backers , AirTree and Blackbird Ventures.

Another great story for Innovation in Australia !

Who is Elevio?

Elevio was cofounded by Chris Duell and Matt Trimarchi in 2015, was incubated at Startmate and after traction, raised circa $1m from VCs AirTree and Blackbird Ventures in a seed round in 2016.

What does Elevio do ?

Elivio is a user education and onboarding platform, allowing companies to upskill their user base with ease.

It provides product knowledge via user guides to customers - enables agents to quickly replicate best practice answers using machine learning, ensuring fast, standardised and correct answers for customers.

It is simple, requiring no technical skill and its ‘Embeddable Assistant' allows support content to be delivered in-product or injected into any area of a website without involving developers.

Who are Elivio’s  customers

Over the last 6 years Elivio currently serve 500 customers delivering over 16,000,000 answers every month.

Customers include  Epic Games, eBay, AccuWeather, Loom and TripAdvisor.

Chris share a story about getting his first $million customer in Epic Games - this was a game changer!

Who paid US$15m for Elivio and why?

Dixa enables brands to serve customers across multiple channels from a single screen including social media, chat, voice and messaging apps, enabling an outstanding experience for both customers and agents.

It doubled its revenues during 2020 and raised $50 million in funding to date with backing from Notion Capital, Project A Ventures and SEED Capital. The company has offices in Copenhagen, London, Kyiv and Lviv.

Mads Fosselius, CEO of Dixa says about the deal :

We’re all about customer service , and the Elevio acquisition will enable us to bring the CX to another level . It’s about “close partnership, strong integration, unique tech” disrupt the world of customer service”.

The Investment Banker

Chris shared on a clubhouse chat that this deal would not have been able to be done without the amazing support and skills of their adviser Scott Colvin at Blackpeak Capital .

Says Chris (albeit after a few celebratory drinks)

Scott painted a real detailed of the company - building a compelling factual story about Elivio and why Dixa had to acquire us. When he showed us the investor deck and proposal  that he was  taking to  Dixa, we were  blown away. This resulted in a valuation and offer made that was beyond our expectations - and worth every cent of the success fee paid!

It’s all about your team

Great insight by Bernard Desmidt

Teams are the predominant unit of organisational performance.

So, given high performing teams are so powerful, why are they still so rare?

In the work Bernard Desmidt does facilitating and coaching executive and leadership teams, four common pitfalls serve to compromise and undermine the power of teaming:

  1. Teams lack a common purpose and clarity of direction – ““we’re mostly a group of leaders focused on doing our own thing”
  2. Team meeting agendas don’t address collective performance objectives – “It’s all about each looking good and less about us achieving great work, together”
  3. The prevalence of a collective ‘mood of resignation’ – “why bother, just another restructure, nothing will really change”
  4. Breakdowns in the relational dynamics – “can’t trust a thing he says, all that matters to him is his own success, and bonus”

To make teaming your differentiator, he shares 4 strategies to building kickass teams - which will result in the exceptional performance and growth

  1. Agree the team’s purpose – agree the cause the team serves greater than itself. Why does the team exist? What is it for? Then live it!
  2. Set an “outcomes focused” team meeting agenda – for each agenda item, specify what decisions are important be made and actions agreed and committed to.
  3. Identify a mood that will best serve the team’s collective way-of-being – rather than show-up in a mood of frustration, resignation or anxiety, choose to collectively stay in a mood of ambition, possibility, curiosity and wonder.
  4. Legitimise your own and each other’s concerns – make it safe to share and talk about what is of concern to each individual and the team, collectively.

Your team is your distinguishing competitive advantage - they will build your corporate culture  which  will make you win
